Abstract
637,099. Inductances. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1946, No. 37681. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1943. [Class 38 (ii)] A high-frequency coil system, the inductance of which is adapted to be pre-set, comprises a tubular iron shell 5 (Fig. 3) magnetically open at least at one end a coil winding 1 contained within the shell and itself containing a hollow iron core 4 coaxial with the shell and an iron plunger 7 movably arranged within the hollow core so that the plunger partly projects from the core at the open end of the shell, whereby as the plunger is moved further out of the core the inductance of the coil is increased. The core and shell are supported by a flanged non-magnetic insulating body 6. This construction ensures that the iron losses, and consequently the Q of the coil system, are practically constant notwithstanding tuning adjustments. The plunger may be as long as, or short compared with, the length of the core. Fig. 6 shows a transformer comprising two such coil systems in a screening tube 9 and separated by an insulating spacer 8, the length of which almost exclusively controls the coupling between the coils. The various components may be preliminarily attached to one another by wirelike condensers 12, or an adhesive, to allow provisional adjustments on the transformer before fitting it in the tube 9. Specifications 450,286 and 637,098, [Group XL (c)], are referred to.
