636,857. Variable condensers. SULLIVAN, Ltd., H. W., and GRIFFITHS, W. H. F. May 21, 1948, No. 13826. [Class 37] An adjustable electric condenser of the interleaving plate type has a plurality of fixed values of capacitance which are not changed by small changes of interleaving of the fixed and slotted moving plates of the condenser, which may be shaped as shown in Fig. 4 into sectors 17-21. The ten capacitance value positions are determined by a " click " device 38, 39 and variations in setting due to back-lash do not affect the area of overlap of sectors of moving plates 11 by the fixed plates 10. Edge capacitance variation due to backlash is kept at a constant percentage by graduation of widths of slots in the moving plates. An interpolating condenser may be embodied as shown in Fig. 6, or may comprise a separate set of moving plates coacting with the main fixed plates and mounted on a spindle concentric with the main spindle. The main plates may be semi-circular or of any other suitable shape and liquid or composite dielectrics of air and solid materials may be used.
