Abstract

636,850. Ear protectors. BARWOOD, A. J., and EDWARDS, D. A. W. May 19, 1948, No. 13598. [Class 63] [Also in Group XXXIX] An ear protector including a padded sealing member which encircles the pinna of a wearer's ear and which may form part of headgear such as a flying helmet or be associated with a head band or other supporting means is of a size to extend from the superior-temporal line F to below the angle of the mandible D and from the neighbourhood of the anterior intersection of the temporo-parietal suture G with the superior temporal line to the neighbourhood of the junction of the temporo-parietal and temporo-occipital sutures G and H. A sealing ring 1 'stuffed with glass fibre 7 and having at least its outside face 6 made of chamois leather is backed by a rigid, domed, supporting member 3 made of metal or other rigid material. A stiff rubber telephone holder 2 having a cylindrical housing 8, coaxial with the external auditory meatus of the wearer, for a telephone receiver 9, may be interposed between these two members. When the ear protectors are formed as part of a helmet 4, the latter fits between the members 2 and 3 and a second layer of material may be placed between the members 1 and 2. When the protector is not embodied in a piece of headgear and a telephone receiver is not required, the head band may be secured between members 1 and 3. When the supporting band is attached to the dome 10, it is necessary to include a chin strap connection from the lower part of the member 3. A capsule 12 which may have a central aperture 14 and may fit within the sealing member 1 is made of high specific gravity rubber to increase the insulation from sound of very high intensity. The dome 10 may be filled with air or with sound insulating material.
