A helmet comprises a cradle of the kind having a crown portion from which radial arms extend outwardly and downwardly and a headband of adjustable circumference which carries upstanding straps pivotally securable to the radial arms of the cradle to that the headband remains located centrally of the helmet interior in spite of adjustment of its circumference. As shown, Fig. 5, the arms 14 of a cradle 15 carry tongues 16 which are inserted in complementary recesses in the helmet shell. Front and rear sections 26, 27 of the headband 18 are adjustably and pivotally secured together by means of studs 28 and holes 29 and carry straps 19 slit adjacent their upper ends at 22. Each strap is adjustably secured to an arm 14 by inserting a stud 21 through the slit 22 and one of holes 23a, b or c. To allow the rear section 27 of the headband to be pivoted downwardly to protect the nape of the neck an additional hole 31 is provided in the rear arms 14. To allow the straps to be adjusted relative to the arms without removing the studs the holes are connected by slots 25 wide enough for the studs to be forced along them. A flexible band 33 of adjustable length and carrying pads 34 of resilient material such as sponge rubber is located close to the inner face of the shell at the junction of the crown and the brim of the helmet by passing studs 37 through slits 35 in the band and holes 36 in the arms 14. A sweatband 38 is removably attached to the headband by first inserting the headband between the two plies of the sweatband and engaging studs 43 on the headband in holes 45 in the sweatband, then bending down apertured straps 39 integral with the headband and passing them through aligned slots 44 and 42 in sweatband and headband respectively and fitting the apertures 41 over the projections 43. In a modified form of the helmet (not shown) the tongues 16 and recesses in the shell are omitted and the cradle is secured to the shell by passing studs through aligned holes in the shell and the arms 14. In this form the band 33 is located between the cradle and the shell and is also secured to the shell by the studs 46.
