Abstract

1,114,214. Helmets. G. VOGLIANO and D. BECKMANN. 28 May, 1965, No. 22867/65. Heading A3V. [Also in Division E2] The inner cradle 7 of a helmet supports a chin strap 8 and is detachably secured to a shell 6 by means such as tapes 19 and 20 mounted on the cradle and the shell respectively and comprising interengageable filamentary hooks and loops. The connection means allow the shell to be separated from the cradle 7 when the tapes are subjected to a force having an upward component between 5 kg and 15 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and pivotal mounting of the tapes 19 on the cradle allows the shell to rotate relative to the cradle when the helmet receive a glancing blow. Tapes 19 are pivotally secured to four head straps, 14-16 shown, themselves secured to a stiff band 9 mounted on the cradle 7. Foam rubber or other resilient padding 17 secured to the straps lies between them and the cradle 7 and similar padding 18 lines the shell.
