Abstract

636,767. Drying and cooling paper. OFFEN, B. Aug. 25, 1947, No. 23442. [Class 96] [Also in Groups XIII and XVI] In a two-stage drying machine for textile or paper webs the drying burners are automatically deflected and cold air introduced on interruption of the web feed to permit instantaneous stopping without scorching. The web 5, after passing under gas burners 12 is subjected to hot air blasts through nozzles 33. Automatic means actuated by stoppage of the web-producing or processing machine energize devices, such as pneumatic rams 16, 23, to move the burners away from the web (and optionally to stop the gas supply to the burners) and also start a fan 54 delivering cold air through pipe 53 to the first drying stage 3 and open dampers 39, thus permitting cool air to flow into the second stage 4. Shield members in the form of steam- or water-cooled pipes may be interposed between the burners and web when the former are deflected. At the exit the web passes over a chilling roller 11 and past an air-blast from pipe 51 to prevent condensation.
