Abstract

1,164,814. Printing apparatus. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. 13 March, 1967 [16 March, 1966], No. 115]8/66. Heading B6C. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus designed to prevent stretching of an extensible web 4 between the units of a multicolour printing machine comprises an endless air-permeable belt 1 driven at a selected speed by a roller 2, a compartment 6 arranged to supply heat to the printed web to prevent set-off, and a suction box 5 in which a sub-stmospheric pressure is maintained so that the web is forced into contact with the belt. A cooling compartment 7 may be provided so that the web is restored to room temperature when it reaches the position 9. The belt may be of dimpled rubber, of perforated material, or of reinforced felt and the printed web may be of polythene or polypropylene. The compartment 7 may be omitted provided the gas pressure differential is maintained until the web has cooled naturally. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the web is fed around the shot-blasted outer surface of a metal sleeve (13) provided with bores (14). The web is heated by means (18) in a box (17) and is cooled by the atmosphere and by coolant tubes, not shown, in the sleeve to a temperature which may be below room temperature. A wall (15) and wipers (16) prevent an excessive inrush of air through the bores (14) into the centre of the sleeve which is at a reduced pressure.
