Abstract

1,023,966. Drying paper &c. HUPP CORPORATION. Nov. 14, 1963 [Nov. 14, 1962], No. 44979/63. Heading F4G. Webs of paper 10 or the like from a former 10 and preliminary dried on heated rolls 26 sufficiently to enable it to support its own weight is dried by passage over support rolls 32 in a series of runs in each of which the rolls are positioned to form a very slight chordal arch in the sheet while passing between radiator elements 34, 36 which are located on both sides of the run and extend substantially the length of each run. Each run may be of up to 160 feet in length at speeds of up to 5000 feet per minute and the heaters operating at 450‹ F. Rollers 38, 40 . . . 46 are positioned at the end of each, run for transferring the web from one run to the next and are responsive to sensing means 62 for individually regulating the speed of each roll to compensate for variations in tension in the web. Heated scouring gas streams may be blown over the web surfaces between the web and heaters in a further embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) and in a further form the drying apparatus of Fig. 1 is housed in chamber at sub-atmospheric pressure. An endless web supporting belt of open-mesh synthetic material, at least partially transparent to radiant energy, may overlie the support rolls 32 in at least the initial run of the web through the apparatus.
