Abstract

905,535. Treating leather. AULSON TANNING MACHINERY CO. Oct. 6, 1960 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 34350/60. Class 76. [Also in Group XIII] A process and apparatus for drying and flexing wet leather comprises conveying the leather between a pair of thin endless blankets, one of which is of heat-transmissive material, in a sinuous path whilst initially heating and then cooling the leather. The leather is fed between endless blankets 11, 21 of porous, heat-transmissive, moisture-absorbent material at a feed drum 13 and is conveyed therebetween in a sinuous path by idler rollers 16 over drums 15 internally heated to a temperature between 212 and 350‹ F. and then over internally cooled drums 25 which may be in a moisture-containing atmosphere. The tension of the blankets is regulatable by rolls 18, 28 to effect longitudinal slippage of the blankets to effect polishing and smoothing of the leather and the blankets are dried on their return to the feed drum by infrared heaters 12, 22.
