Abstract

<PICT:0801971/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0801971/IV (a)/2> Organic plastic sheet material is subjected to tension uniformly across a narrow heated zone in which the marginal portions are heated to less extent. The sheet material 10 is fed from roller 20, Fig. 1, to roller 22 between two pairs of rollers 12, 14 and 16, 18 rotating at different speeds to impart stretch. A pair of heating elements 24, 26 extend across, above and below the film between the stretching rollers but do not extend to the edge of the sheet. The sheet may be composed of polyvinyl alcohol. The stretching temperature may be 350 DEG to 450 DEG F
