883,776. Ornamenting. BLEACHERS' ASSOCIATION Ltd., and BRADFORD DYERS' ASSOCIATION Ltd. Sept. 26, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33265/59. Class 93 Extensible sheet material is ornamented by forcible extension over its whole area, fixing in one or more selected regions only, and allowing or causing the material to relax, whereby the fixed regions pucker and become displaced from the normal surface to form into ruffles, ribs, frills, or the like. A continuous web, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, may be fed between pairs of rollers defining two spaced nips, the rollers forming the first nip rotating at a slower speed than those defining the second nip to effect stretching. The stretched web between the nips may be led or held against a heated profiled shoe, plate or roller to fix the contacted stretched parts of the web. The relaxation after the second nip may be encouraged by immersion in a liquid, by subjection to steam treatment, or by contacting with a cold cylinder. Fixation of the selected stretched regions may also be effected by application of a fixing agent, e.g. a resin. Before, during, or after the treatment, the material may be printed or coloured. The process may also be applied to separate sheets. As shown, regions W1 and W2 are fixed regions, while W3 are unfixed regions.
