[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A powder clutch is included in the transmission system of a motor vehicle and comprises a rotatable casing containing a suitable powder mounted on a shaft connected to the engine, and a driven member within the casing mounted on a shaft connected to the driving wheels. The casing may be provided with perforated diaphragms spaced axially in alternating relationship with perforated discs secured to the driven shaft. The perforations may be countersunk on one side to assist distribution of the powder. The casing may be provided with cooling fins, and the discs may have centrifugal blades or helicoidal grooves to assist in impelling the powder towards the periphery of the casing. The clutch may be incorporated in or replace the engine flywheel. Various positions of the powder clutch within the transmission which may or may not include a change speed gear are described. Graphs showing the performance of the powder clutch are also described. Specifications 285,970, [Class 80 (ii)], and 384,882 are referred to.
