Abstract
636,262. Water chambers in steam boiler fireboxes. LOCOMOTIVE FIREBOX CO. July 31, 1947, No. 20767. Convention date, April 7,1941. [Class 123(ii)] In a locomotive boiler in which the firebox 11 is fitted with one or more thermic syphons 24, the latter each extending between, for example, the crown and front throat sheets 12, 16 of the firebox and being provided with a flanged elongated outlet opening 31, said openings 31 and the boiler wrapper or roof sheet 17 are tied together by spaced rods 39. The upper end of each rod 39 is secured to the wrapper sheet 17, preferably by a universal connection 41, and the lower end is provided with a clevis member 37 adapted to straddle and be pivotally jointed by means of a pin 38 to a bridge plate 35 which is disposed transversely across the syphon opening 31 and welded thereto along its side edges 36. The bridge plate 35 may be replaced by a member having a pair of spaced legs which fit between and are riveted to the insides of the respective side walls 25 of the syphon. The flange 27 of the opening 31 may be connected to the wrapper sheet 17 by two longitudinal rows of staybolts 42 as shown.
