Abstract

635,873. Distortable - container switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4042. Convention date, March 27, 1943. [Class 38 (v)] The thin metal operating diaphragm 2 of a high-voltage, high-frequency vacuum switch intended for controlling the radio circuits of aircraft or for use at sea, is coated with an alkyd resin to ensure perfect sealing of the diaphragm and render it resistant to the effects of salt-water spray and also to improve the switch insulation. The switch comprises a glass envelope 1 to which is sealed at 14 a metal terminal thimble 12 united to the diaphragm 2 by a flange 2a. A tubular arm 11 of copperplated steel is brazed to the diaphragm and carries a contact 9 of molybdenum, which is movable by the arm 11 to engage contact 7 or 8, also of molybdenum, mounted on terminals 3, 4 in re-entrant seals 5, 6. The switch is evacuated through the tubular arm 11 which is then sealed at 11a. The alkyd resin, a rosinmodified, oil-modified, glyceryl phthalate resin thinned by a solvent such as benzene or toluene, is applied to the exterior of the diaphragm 2 and over the flange 2a, and also to the exposed part of the arm 11 and portions 3a, 4a of the terminals 3, 4. The diaphragm, thimble, and terminals 3, 4 are of an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy having the same coefficient of expansion as glass, the exposed parts of the terminals being cadmium-plated to provide low resistance to high-frequency currents and'resist corrosion.
