Abstract

1,078,863. Vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1965 [Aug. 12, 1964], No. 32937/64. Heading H2B. In a vacuum switch a fixed annular contact 15 is mounted on a hollow cylindrical stem 13 through which passes a rod 26 carrying movable annular contact 19, heavy current in rod 26 thus creating a circular field in the region of the contacts 15, 19 which reacts with the arc to move it outwards on to sloping annular arcrunning surfaces 16, 20 forming extensions of the contacts. Permanent magnets 33, 34 are located adjacent the contacts to create a radial field which reacts with the arc to drive the arc around the circumference of the surfaces 16, 20. The contacts are enclosed in an evacuated metal case 32 sealed to a flange 21 of stem 13 which forms one terminal of the switch. An insulating spacer 22 is sealed to the flange 21 and to a disc 24 which serves to mount the switch and also to carry the usual bellows 30. The invention is stated to be applicable also to air-break switches at low voltages.
