Abstract

635,646. Turnable forecarriages; vibrationdampers. DYSON, J., POLLARD, T. A., BARKER, S., and DYSON & CO., Ltd., R. A. Dec. 11, 1947, No. 32638. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] In a ball-bearing steering turntable for a road trailer wagon, normal ball-bearing action obtains between the race rings, which are then separated and rotatably free of each other, when the trailer is stationary, but when the trailer is being hauled, the rings make direct frictional contact. In the arrangement shown, upper and lower rings 1 and 6 which are secured by lugs 2 and 2a to cross-members of the trailer and a steering forecarriage respectively, are each formed with opposed ball-race grooves 10 and 11, the sectional curvature of which is greater in radius than that of balls 12 which are disposed between them. The grooves 10 and 11 are formed in an annular channel 13 and ridge 14 respectively, which are complementary in shape and between which there is clearance when the trailer is stationary. A locking ring 17 secured to the upper ring 1 is provided with an annular lip 18 which with ring 1 forms an annular side recess for a shoulder 15 formed by the periphery of the ridge 14. When the trailer is stationary, the rings assume a relatively concentric position, as shown, but when the trailer is being hauled, the rings are relatively displaced to effect a lifting and wedging action between the races 10 and 11 whereby the draught is transmitted by the direct contact of the vertical surfaces of the ridge 14 and the channel 13 and by the abutment of the lip 18 against the shoulder 15. The lugs 2 and 2a may each be replaced by an annular flange rolled integral with or welded to the rings 1 and 6. Also, only one of the grooves 10 or 11 may be greater in radius than that of the balls 12.
