Abstract

1370940 Castors; gliders JOSEPH GILLOTT & SONS Ltd 3 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971 13 July 1972] 53822/71 and 32755/72 Heading A4U A floor-engaging mobile support for furniture comprises a body 10 adapted to be fitted to the furniture so as to swivel about a vertical axis, a cap 30 having a smooth downwardly-presented convex underside, and a roller 25 rotatably fitted within the body at a position offset from the vertical axis, the body and the cap having interengaging load transmitting surfaces and the roller projecting through an aperture in the cap whereby a hard floor will be engaged by the roller but a soft floor such as a deep pile carpet will be engaged by the cap. The invention also includes replacing the apertured cap by a plain cap and omitting the roller. All of the parts may be moulded of plastics material, or the body may be a metal casting, e.g. of light aluminium alloy. A central bore 20 in the body is fitted with a metal cup 19 adapted to receive a swivel pin 21 rotatably retained by a circlip 22, the cup 19 having a flanged upper end 19b seated within a recess 23 and peened over a washer 24 to provide a thrust bearing. The roller spindle 27 which may be integral with the roller is snap-engaged in bearing recesses 29. Internally of the support a pair of annular bosses depending from the body 10 are received within annular recesses provided by a pair of bosses upstanding on the cap 30, Figs.2 and 4 (not shown), and adhesive may be placed in the recesses to permanently secure the cap to the body. These inter-engaging bosses may be load-transmitting when the support is used on a soft floor. The roller may be of twinwheel construction, and the cap may have a snapfit engagement with the body.
