Abstract
634,617. Making valves. JOSEPH, C. S., and VALVES, Ltd. Jan. 22, 1948, No. 1953. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A poppet valve is made by butt welding and preferably by flash butt welding two or more rods of different materials and then forging one end of the composite rod to form a head. Rods a and b of silicon chrome steel and austenitic steel are joined end-to-end by flash butt welding and the part b is forged, as by electrical upsetting, to form the valve head. The upsetting is preferably carried out in two stages and the valve is finished by machining. In a modification, three different rods are joined so that the forged head itself comprises two different steels.
