Abstract

Acid-treated petroleum hydrocarbon oils are treated in the neutral state (and optionally after treatment with clay), with a normal alkali metal sulphite, whereby their corrosiveness to copper is reduced. The sulphite is preferably in aqueous solution and the treatment may be carried out at a temperature of 40-100 DEG C., and at atmospheric or raised pressure. Oils specified are those which are more viscous than gasoline, including petroleum oils, a number of which are specified, synthetic lubricating oil of the simple or polymerized ester type, or mixtures of both. Examples of ester-type lubricating oils are acryloid polymers having a molecular weight of 8,000-10,000 polymerized esters of acrylic or fumaric acid with saturated aliphatic alcohols having 8-10 carbon atoms and co-polymers of maleates with fumarates or with vinyl acetate. In the examples, a paraffinic base oil, a compounded hydraulic oil, and a Mid-Continent base white oil are treated with aqueous sodium sulphite after acid treatment and neutralization. An example is given also of the treatment of a synthetic lubricant (di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate) with aqueous sodium sulphite. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the treatment of the oils with alkaline earth metal sulphites, either dry or in aqueous suspension. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Synthetic lubricating oils of the simple or polymerized ester type which are more viscous than gasoline are treated in the neutral state with a normal alkali metal sulphite, whereby their corrosiveness to copper is reduced.
