Abstract

In metal rolling the roll-metal interface is lubricated with a circulating dispersion of a petroleum hydrocarbon oil in water, the dispersion being maintained if necessary by agitation during circulation and having a separation temperature between that attained by the dispersion at the interface and the lowest temperature in the circulation system. Oils specified are solvent refined paraffinic or conventionally refined naphthenic mineral oils of specified viscosities. Emulsifying agents disclosed are alkylphenol/ethylene oxide condensates and sodium petroleum sulphonates. Optional additives are vegetable oils, sulphurized fats, chlorinated polyolefines, polyethylene glycol esters, fats, phenols, chlorothionophosphates and fatty acids.
