Abstract

Oil solutions of alkaline earth metal sulphonates of increased alkalinity, suitable as lubricating oil additives, are prepared by reacting a solution of an alkaline earth metal sulphonate in a petroleum oil with an alkaline earth metal hydroxide having the same metallic radicle as the sulphonate, the process being carried out in the presence of alkaline earth metal sulphonate in excess of that required to react with the alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or in the presence of one or more dispersion agents chosen from certain fatty acids (namely oleic, ricinoleic, linoleic, lauric, palmitic or stearic acids), amines (primary, secondary or tertiary), lauryl or oleyl alcohol, condensation products of phenols with alkylene oxides, polymers or copolymers of esters (derived from unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids and alcohols, including alkoxylated alcohols), and alkylene oxide/phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon reaction products. The sulphonates may be petroleum sulphonates or alkaryl sulphonates, while the metal hydroxide may be added in powder form or suspended in acetone or a C1-C4 alcohol. In the examples, a dispersion of hydrated baryta in ethyl alcohol is added to a heated solution of barium petroleum sulphonate containing the dispersion agent, which is oleic acid, an ethylene oxide/oleic acid condensation product or a blend of calcium and barium petroleum sulphonates (this blend being used alone or in admixture with one of the following: oleic acid, C16 primary alkylamine, ethylene oxide/oleic acid condensation product and ethylene oxide/C16 primary alkylamine condensation product).
