Abstract

A lubricating grease comprises a lubricating oil thickened to a grease consistency with a metal alcoholate/carboxylate derived from a hydroxy fatty acid. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil while the thickening agent may have the formula (RCOO)x-nX(OH)n wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical having one or more substituents at least one of which is a metaloxy group, X is a soap-forming metal (e.g. an alkali or alkaline earth metal, magnesium or aluminium) or a soap-forming group (e.g. ammonium), x is the valency of X and n is 0 or a number smaller than x. The grease consistency may be obtained by the use of a mixture of such metaloxy soaps or a mixture of metaloxy soaps and other soaps, e.g. hydroxy fatty acid soaps. The thickening agent may be prepared (1) by reacting a hydroxy fatty acid, or a soap thereof, with a metal or metal alcoholate or (2) by reacting an ester of a hydroxy fatty acid with a metal or metal alcoholate to form a metaloxy fatty acid ester and then saponifying the latter with a metal hydroxide. In examples, hydrogenated castor oil is reacted with sodium, lithium or lithium ethoxide and the reaction product is saponified with lithium hydroxide in the presence of mineral lubricating oil. In a further example, 12-hydroxy stearic acid is reacted with lithium and the reaction product is dissolved in mineral lubricating oil. For comparison purposes, the preparation of a conventional lithium 12-hydroxy stearate grease, by reacting 12-hydroxy stearic acid with lithium hydroxide with 12-hydroxy stearic acid in the presence of mineral lubricating oil, is described.
