Abstract

634,220. Coating webs. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and NASMITH, J. I. May 20, 1947, No. 13565. [Class 140] Apparatus for coating webs comprises a feed roller 1 partly immersed in a trough 2 of coating material and a stripping roller 6 out of contact with the feed roller such that the coating material is transferred from the feed roller by surface tension, the feed roller being positively driven and the stripping roller rotated by frictional contact with the web. A pair of arms 14, pivoted at 15, carry guide rollers 19, 20 and 21. The bearings of the feed roller 1 are mounted in slidable blocks so that the roller may be adjusted towards or away from the stripping roller 6 to regulate the coating thickness. The web is lightly tensioned by any known braking device on the feed reel, and when out of action may be removed from contact with the stripping roller 6 by rotating the arms 14. In the operative position the arms 14 rest upon the bearing of the roller 6.
