Abstract

A method of applying a coating to a web 23, e.g. of board material or paper, comprises restraining the coated surface to follow a curved path defined by an endless surface 2, 2A, 2B that extends longitudinally and <PICT:0923390/IV(a)/1> arcuately along the web, moves in the reverse direction thereto, and rubs the coated surface, whereby some of the coating is retained on the web and some is removed and reapplied, e.g. at points 29, 31, 34, where the web leaves the surface. The surface is formed by one or more chrome-plated rollers 2, 2A, 2B rotating anticlockwise, or by endless metal bands, vertically adjustable rollers 8 guiding the web in an arcuate path so that it laps the rollers 2, 2A, 2B. A thixotropic coating material is fed to a bath 17 and applied by rollers 16, 18 to the web 23, a spring-pressed blade 19 doctoring the roller 18, which has a roughened surface. The rollers 2, 2A, 2B preferably run at different speeds, e.g. for a web speed of 250 feet/minute, peripheral roller speeds of 50 feet/minute, 500 feet/minute, and 250 feet/minute respectively are chosen, and the arcs of contact of the web with the rollers also may differ. The web may be coated on both surfaces, the rollers 8 being then chrome-plated. A coating composition mentioned comprises (parts by weight):-90 parts clay, 10 parts titanium oxide, and 20 parts casein, with water to give 42% solids. Instead of casein, 5 parts casein plus 15 parts latex may be employed, with water to give 54% solids.
