Abstract

681,278. Coating webs. KAUPY, A. Jan. 4, 1951. [Jan. 6, 1950] No. 451/50. Class 140. A web M is coated on both sides by leading itunder tension over a coating roller 30, under a knife-blade 37 in front of which further coating composition is supplied by hand or mechanically, and over a second knife-blade 43 which smooths the roller-applied coating, the relative positions of the roller and blades being such as to give the required spreading angles of about 72 degrees at each blade. The position of the roller and one or both blades may be adjustable. The roller may supply composition from a trough 31 which may contain a stirrer 47 driven from an idler roll 28 over which the web passes. Excess composition may be removed from roller 30 by a scraper or by the wall 45 of the trough, and the excess from both blades may drip into the trough. The coated web travels horizontally to the other end of the machine where it is wound up. The machine may have a coating unit at each end, so that the wound-up coated web may be drawn from the wind-up reel through a coating unit similar to that described situated at the wind-up end of the machine, and wound up again at the original starting point. A drying device may be interposed between the two ends of the machine.
