Abstract

Coating materials in long lengths.-In a method of and apparatus for coating webs of paper or fabric, liquid is taken up from a trough by a roller provided with an adjustable scraper blade, and the web is passed over a second roller and travels in the opposite direction to the surface of the first roller at the point of contact. Liquid is taken up by the roller A, Fig. 1, and spread in a thin uniform layer by an adjustable scraper C. The web E is lightly pressed against the roller A by a roller B, preferably made of resilient material such as soft rubber, which rotates in the same sense as the roller A, so that at the point of contact the surface of the roller A and the web are moving in opposite directions. Preferably the roller A rotates more rapidly than the roller B. In a modification, a regulating roller D is provided to adjust the thickness of the layer of liquid on the roller A, a scraper C being used to clean the surface of the roller D.
