Abstract

Apparatus for coating travelling sheet material comprises a smooth movable surface for applying coating composition to the sheet material, and an indented edge doctor blade acting on the smooth surface prior to application of the coating composition to the sheet material, the applied coating thereafter being smoothed. The smooth surface may comprise a roller mounted with its axis horizontal and picking up coating composition from a trough placed beneath the roller. Alternatively, the smooth surface may comprise and endless band. The doctor blade may be in the form of a comb or the blade may have transverse grooves on one side extending from at least one edge. The angle at which the doctor blade contacts the surface may be adjusted to vary the depth of coating composition applied, and may also be reciprocated across the moving surface, transverse to the direction of movement of said surface. A reverse smoothing roller may be employed to smooth the coating on the sheet material. The doctor blade is preferably made from steel or nylon. Examples of sheet materials and coating compositions are given.
