Abstract

1300746 Curtain coating apparatus KODAK Ltd 26 March 1970 [26 March 1969 11 Dec 1969] 15870/69 and 60529/69 Heading D1L Curtain coating apparatus wherein a liquid coating composition is fed onto an inclined surface 11, flows onto a curved extension 12 and over a lip 13. Thus a free falling curtain of coating composition is formed between a pair of edge guides with a support material being passed through the curtain in a transverse direction to the plane thereof. To obtain a substantially uniform coating thickness between the trailing ends of the brushes 32, attached to the edge guides, the edge guides are moved apart by turning a cam 23 by means of a handle 25, until the curtain begins to thin out in a vertical line about 1/16 inch in from the edge guide, giving rise to coating as shown in Fig. 12, the brushes then being moved back towards the centre about 1/32 inch so that the thinned out portion disappears and an even coating as shown in Fig. 11 is obtained. The invention is used with curtain widths of 42 inches, while coating at speeds in the range from 150 to 250 feet per minute.
