Abstract
632,534. Electric cables. HOLMES, E. P. July 28, 1947, No. 20357. [Class 36] In order to protect the paper insulation 2 from the heat produced when a cable is provided with a sheath 6 of extruded copper, aluminium, or other high melting point metal, a heatprotective layer of metal 3 is provided to cover the insulation and an air space is left between the layer 3 and the sheath 6. The layer 3 may consist of a wound tape of metal or metallized paper or cellulosic material. Aluminium foil backed with paper may be used. The surface of the metal may be bright to provide good heat reflecting qualities. As shown in Fig. 2, the metal foil 3 may be crinkled or otherwise formed with projections 4 to separate it from the sheath and form air-spaces 5. The sheath may alternatively be separated from the foil 3 by a helical winding of asbestos cord. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the paper-backed aluminium foil 8 is covered with cotton tape 9 having entwined metal strands which make contact with the sheath 6. The tape may become charred when the sheath is extruded but the insulation within the foil 8 is unaffected. The overlapping turns of the tape maintain airspaces 5. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which the protective layer consists of a wound tape comprising a cellulosic layer 11 and a layer 10 of aluminium foil, one edge of the compound tape being folded over as shown at 12 to form air-spaces 5.
