Abstract

675,225. Compound-filled cables. GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. Oct. 12, 1950 [Oct. 5, 1949], No. 26333/49. Addition to 625,512. Class 36. A super-tension cable is provided with a lapped dielectric consisting of an inner part 3 built up of not less than fourteen layers of orientated polystyrene film and an outer part of of pre-impregnated paper, the interstices of both parts being filled with an insulating compound which does not flow within the working range of the cable, and the inner part having a wall thickness lying within a range whose lower limit is equal to 10 per cent of the radius of the conductor surface and whose upper limit amounts to 45 per cent of the radial wall thickness of the whole dielectric. The inner part 3 of the insulation may consist of alternate layers of polystyrene film and paper, the thickness of both the polystyrene and the paper being about 3.5 mils. Alternatively the paper may have a thickness of 2.5 mils. and the polystyrene a thickness of 4 mils. The impregnating compound may consist of resinous compounds, petroleum jellies and similar materials having a set point of about 60 ‹ C. or higher, depending on the working range of the cable. The cable preferably comprises a conductor 1, a metallized paper screen 2, dielectric 3, 4, a copper screening tape 5, a lead or aluminium sheath 6 and a protective covering 7.
