Abstract
675,224. Gas-filled cables. GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. Oct. 12, 1950 [Oct. 13, 1949], No. 26332/49. Addition to 625,512. Class 36. A super-tension electric cable is provided with a lapped dielectric consisting of an inner part 3 built up of not less than fourteen alternate single strip layers of orientated polystyrene film and pre-impregnated paper, and an outer part 4 of pre-impregnated paper, the interstices of both parts being filled with gas under super-atmospheric pressure under operating conditions, and the inner part 3 having a wall thickness lying within a range whose lower limit is equal to 10 per cent of the radius of the conductor surface and whose upper limit amounts to 45 per cent of the wall thickness of the whole dielectric. The polystyrene film is about 4 mils. thick and the interleaving paper about 2.5 mils. The cable preferably comprises a conductor 1, a metallized paper screen 2, dielectric 3, 4, a copper tape screen 5, lead sheath 6, metal re-inforcing tapes 7, 8, 9, an outer lead sheath 10 and a protective covering of bitumen-impregnated jute or the like 11. Under operating conditions the cable core within the lead sheath 6 contains nitrogen under a pressure of fourteen atmospheres.
