[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XVII] A press jaw, particularly for use in heat sealing paper bags coated with thermoplastic material comprises a set of blades 14 which are movable relatively to each other to allow the pressing surface to accommodate itself to an irregular surface. The blades 14 are normally separated from similar blades 7 by means of a spring (19)-urged plate 17 which engages behind shoulders 15 on the blades 14. When in use, the blades 14 are forced back and they in turn force the blades 7 against a rubber or like block 8. This block is enclosed in a casing and thus tends to act as a fluid, ensuring that the pressure exerted by each blade is the same. Electric heating elements 21 may be provided outside a casing 12 enclosing the blades 14 or they may be incorporated with the blades. The use of two sets of blades helps to prevent loss of heat from the blades 14. The casings enclosing the blades may be formed from laminated steel plates and insulating sheets.
