' 1 cum. (Cl. 24-248) My invention relates generally to a hydraulically operated machine for stretching and shaping metal sheets, and more particularly my invention relates to improvements in jaws used on such a machine.
It is an object of my invention-to provide such a jaw that will grip sheet metal for a straight pull, in a variety of positions oi the jaw.
Still another object is to provide a jaw for such a machine that will minimize the tearing of sheet 10 metal adjacent the jaw.
My invention also has for its objects to provide a jaw for such a machine that is vpositive in operation, convenient in use, easily perable to grip sheet metal and easily operable to release such is sheet metal, economical of manufacture, relatively simple and of general superiority-and serviceability. The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangego ments of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawings merely show and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Pig. 1 is a diagrammatic elevational view of a pair of laws mounted in relative operative positions. Pig. 2 is a slightly enlarged side elevation, partly broken away, looking in the direction of arrows 1-4 of Pig. 1. r

.Theinnerfacesllandfloithejawsliandll on the jaw body-ll, converge toward lips 2. and It of the jaws ll and II respectively. Liners 22 and 13 are disposed upon the converging faces ll clamping plates 2' and ii. These plates have guide pins II to direct converging movement of the plates on the roller bearings. Upon the faces of the plates 26 and II. are replaceable inserts ll and II. The inserts II and a may be suitably knurled or roughened as suggested by the lines on member I! in Fig. 6.
Actuating means for moving the jaw plates 10 and 21 toward each other on the conversing series of roller bearings 24 and 25, comprise pistons Si in cylinders 82. Abutments II maybe arranged on the pistons II, to engage the lower portions of the jaw plates 20 and 21, as best shown in Fig. 3. An extension 34 of reduced diameter underneath the piston Ii is disposed opposite an inlet for air'pressure. A flexible hose 3. is connected to the inlet 3|. It is to be understood that each cylinder I! has its own flexible connecting hose.
'lleanstendingtomaintainthejawbody lIin adjusted positions comprises a helical spring 31 wolmd upon the shaft ll. The spring 31 abuts te, cup-shaped annular members I. and II, causing friction between the I outer faces of the cup-shaped members and adjacent positions of the body it of the jaw member. A spline ll. urged in place by a screw ll restricts rotary movement of the cup-shaped members II and 3!.
In the operation of a stretching and shaping machine, having my present jaw members, any suitable table means 42 may be moved vertically between oppoud jaws II, which are arranged in lines parallel with each other. In Fig. 1 a metal sheet 43 has been indicated as being clamped at its ends by the jaw plates 26 and 21. Within the limits of the swinging movement of the jaw members II on the shafts ll, the jaw members may swingtoanypositicmcausingastraightpullon the metal sheet 43, when the table I! is raised forcibly against the sheet I. There may, oi course, be a wide'variety of shapes and sizes for the vertically movable table I. The wavy line 44 in Fig. 1 indicates that the center portion of the sheet 48. and of the table 42 have been broken away.
