Abstract

A haemostatic composition is prepared by recovering thrombin from blood plasma, dissolving the thrombin in salt water, adding to the solution a support for thrombin consisting of an amino acid which is soluble in salt water and insoluble in the organic liquids which precipitate thrombin, which absorbs thrombin in a labile manner and which has no detrimental action on parenteral injection, cooling the solution, precipitating both thrombin and the support with an organic liquid, allowing the precipitate to settle in the cold, draining and drying it in vacuo. Glycocoll is the preferred amino acid, and alcohol or acetone are the preferred precipitating liquids. The product is used as a haemostatic in general, or particularly for parental intramuscular or oral administration. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also refers to holosides and sugars as suitable supports. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
