Abstract

Stable products having the property of shortening the period of bleeding are prepared by evaporating to dryness under sterile conditions pressed juices or extracts from the spinal cord or brain of mammals, e.g. calves. The pressed juices are purified by centrifuging and filtering. Extracts are obtained by the use of water or dilute aqueous solutions of salts, e.g. sodium chloride, or water and aqueous mixtures of soluble organic substances, e.g. alcohols, pyridine, dimethylamine. The coagulable proteins may be precipitated by heating to 80 DEG C. or by addition of water soluble organic liquids or strong solutions thereof or of salts. By addition of water soluble organic liquids in greater amount, the active principle may be precipitated from the extract or juice and is then extracted from the precipitate by means of aqueous solvents, e.g. 50 per cent alcohol. The evaporation of the liquid preparations is conducted at low temperatures and reduced pressures. Specification 349,257 is referred to.
