Abstract

Preparations for the treatment of malignant tumours are obtained from the organs, bone marrow, or body fluids of animals which have been inoculated with fresh virulent tumour cells, or with extracts or pressed juices thereof prepared according to Specification 366,503, but have remained tumour free after such treatment. Extracts or pressed juices of the glands or other organs may be employed, the extracts being obtained by means of water, or aqueous salt solutions, or organic liquids which preferably contain water. Blood may be employed, preferably in the form of citrate blood, and may be extracted with a solvent such as ether, or may be mixed with a water-miscible solvent such as alcohol in excess, and the liquid, after being separated from the precipitate which forms, treated to remove the solvent and the residue so obtained taken up in a physiological salt solution. The processes, particularly the first extraction steps are preferably carried out at low temperatures. The solutions obtained may be further purified by addition of solvents such as alcohol, acetone or ether to precipitate impurities, or by addition of adsorbents such as aluminium hydroxide or active charcoal to remove ballast substances, and are sterilized by filtration, if desired after concentration, and the sterilized solutions may be dried at low temperature to yield stable dry products. Examples relate to the treatment of the blood, liver, spleen, thymus glands and lungs of wethers, rabbits, or mice which have been treated in the manner referred to above, and in some cases the originating materials are subjected to preliminary treatment by freezing with carbon dioxide snow.
