Abstract
631,251. Microscopes. HALLIMOND, A. F. Jan. 9, 1947, No. 761. [Class 97 (i)] To improve the image contrast, two diaphragms, having transparent and opaque portions, are placed respectively at or near the upper principal focus of the objective and at a conjugate position below the condenser, a primary transparent portion of the upper diaphragm being shaped to transmit a direct beam defined bv the lower diaphragm, while its opaque portions intercept any deviated light over a certain angle on either side of the direct beam, determined by their width, the upper diaphragm having a transparent portion at least outside one of the opaque portions to maintain resolution. As shown, the lower diaphragm comprises a transparent annulus 1 and the upper diaphragm a transparent annulus 6 surrounded by two opaque annuli 7, 8. The central portion 9 may be transparent and the outer portion 10 opaque or vice-versa or both may be transparent. The annuli may be marked directly on the objective and/or condenser. In a modification, the effect of the opaque portions may be produced by making them of polarizing material and using a suitable polarization system.
