Abstract
682,350. Sight-testing apparatus. WILMUT, E. B. July 9, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No. 18829/50. Class 97 (i). Sight-testing apparatus comprises an illuminated object from one or more letters or symbols on a part or parts of which is transmitted or reflected through a polarizer light which is polarized in a plane at right angles to light from one or more other letters or symbols on another part or parts of the object and passing through another polarizer, and two polarizing screens in the path of the polarized light so arranged that the patient sees with one eye letters or symbols from which light polarized in one plane is transmitted or reflected and with the other eye letters or symbols from which light polarized in the other plane is transmitted or reflected, at least a part of the remainder of the object transmitting or reflecting light which is not polarized and is seen by both eyes to form a fusion lock. The apparatus shown comprises a transparent or translucent sheet A bearing letters F, L over which are superposed complementary polarizers B, C. The sheet is illuminated from the rear and is blacked out except for the letters and a narrow band E, the latter forming a fusion lock for a patient who views the sheet through complementary polarizers G, H in a carrier F. In another form, the object is in the form of letters on a reflecting chart disposed a short distance behind a glass plate which is in the form of two sheets carrying between them the polarizing letters B, C.
