Abstract

580,869. Polarizers. WRIGHT, E. H. Feb. 28, 1945, No. 7107/44. [Class 97 (i)] In a light polarizer a number of plates G of refractive material are sandwiched between the hypotenuse XZ of a right-angled prism XYZ and the adjacent face MN of another prism LMNOPQ through which the light beam I passes to the plates G, the prism LMNOPQ having a face LQ normal to the incident beam I, a surface PQ parallel to the surface MN and adapted to reflect the rays reflected from the plates G, and a face NO normal to the emergent rays R. The refractive plates G are of material such as glass, mica, quartz, plastic or lamina-separated mica as described in Specification 580,870. The complementary angles of the prism XYZ vary in accordance with the refractive index of the plates. In a modification quarter-wave or half-wave retardation plates may be attached to the faces NO, XZ or YZ to vary the nature of the light emerging from the faces YZ and NO.
