Abstract
866,091. Polarimeters. BOR, J. July 27, 1959 [April 29, 1958], No. 13603/58. Class 97(1) A method of polarimetry comprises passing a parallel beam of light through a polarizer and then through a rotator adapted to rotate the plane of polarization of the light by different angles depending on the spacing of the light path from a neutral or zero-rotation reference path through the rotator, the light thereafter being passed through an analyser, and observations made on the light pattern projectedthereby. As shown, parallel plane polarized light from a nicol prism 1 is passed through an optical rotator 3, 4 and an analyzer 2. and then dispersed at 6 and focused by crosscylindrical lenses 7 and 8 on a screen or photographic plate 9. The rotator 3, 4 consists of two wedge shaped polarizing elements, adapted to rotate the plane of polarization in opposite senses, so that the net rotation of the light transmitted thereby depends upon the spacing of the light path from a zero-rotation plane indicated by the line 5. A pattern of alternating dark and light springs will be formed on the screen or plate 9 and this pattern will be displaced when a specimen 12 is introduced into the light path, such displacement being a measure of the rotary power of the specimen 12. Monochromatic light maybe passed through the instrument or, if it is desired to carry out at one time tests with different wave lengths, the light may be polychromatic.
