Abstract

789,597. Polarizingapparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, - Ltd. Sept. 21, 1955 [Sept. 21, 1954], No. 27295/54. Class 97(1) The first reflection of unpolarized incident light at the polarizing angle on.a first surface gives rise to a first plane polarized reflected beam and the partially plane polarized transmitted beam is reflected at the polarizing angle on another surface to give a second plane polarized reflected beam having its plane of polarization perpendicular to that of the first and a transmitted beam which is absorbed. Plane polarized beams II and III are thus obtained from unpolarized beam I by polarizing reflections at 5 and 8 and total reflections at 6 and 7. Preferably, an interference filter is provided at the first polarizing reflection interface 5 and this may consist. of superimposed layers of alternately high and low refractive index, each layer having a thickness equivalent to one quarter of the wavelength of the light used. Alternate layers may have the same refractive index and the filter may consist of two layers of zinc sulphide and one of silica. The transmitted beam from the second polarizing reflection at 8 is absorbed in a plate 4 of black glass which is cemented to the side of rhomboidal prism 3, the apparatus further consisting of a rhomboidal prism 1 and a triangular prism 2. The emergent beams II and III are parallel.
