Abstract
600,213. Eye protection devices. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). July 11, 1945, No. 17757. [Class 97 (i)] A device comprises at least two pairs of cells, carrying light polarizers and mounted in alignment with the respective eyes of the wearer when in use, one pair of said cells being rotated by means engaging the periphery of each and having frictional contact with the second pair of cells whereby the latter pair is also rotated, further means being provided to rotate the second pair of cells independently of the first pair. The first pair of cells may each carry two polarizers, the second pair of cells being carried by the first pair so that the quarterwave plate, which each supports, lies between the polarizers. To the rims of a pair of goggles is hingedly connected by lugs 6 a casing 20, Figs. III and IV, enclosing cells 11, 13 carrying polarizers 9, 10 respectively. Formed on the periphery of the cells are teeth 12, 14 respectively, the teeth 14 being engaged by worm gears 15 on a rod 16, while'the teeth 12 are engaged by a spur-wheel 18. The frictional contact between the two cells is sufficient to impart rotation to the cells 11, when the cells 13'are rotated by the rod 16, but the cells 13 are held fast by the rod 16 when the cells 11 are rotated by the spur-wheel 18 to vary the light transmission. An element 7 of glass' having the property of giving good definition may also be mounted on the casing 20.
