Abstract
488,958. Spectacles &c. FLEMING, R. J., and FLEMING, Ltd., J. & H. Feb. 4, 1937, No. 3389. [Class 97 (i)] In a lens comprising polarixing material for use in spectacles, the polarizing material, in the form of crystals in a matrix of plastic material is only applied to a portion of the lens of such size and position as is required to eliminate glare due to reflection from objects in the field of view. Fig. 6 shows a lens 24 having applied to a portion of one surface a layer 28 of polarizing material which is protected by a cover glass 29. Fig. 7 shows another form in which there is enclosed between the lens 24 and a cover glass 30 a complete layer of which the portion 28 is of polarizing material and the portion 31 is of safety but non-polarizing material. The portion 31, or the corresponding part of the cover glass, may be tinted. The lenses may be mounted in their frames in such a way that the positions of the polarizing portions can be varied. In Fig. 10, the lenses, having polarizing portions 35 and non-polarizing portions 36 are carried by mounts having teeth 38 meshing with worms 39 on a spindle 40 passing through the frame and having an operating-knob 42. Lenses as above described may be mounted in a separate frame which can be clipped on to an ordinary spectacle frame. Specifications 177,948, [Class 97 (i)], 412,179, and 433,455 are referred to.
