Abstract

695,297. Microscope objectives. COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, Ltd. Oct. 5, 1951 [Oct. 23, 1950], No. 25782/50. Class 97 (i). A microscope objective comprising a concave and a convex mirror facing each other is formed of two transparent elements, the outer faces of which are formed respectively as the two mirrors and the inner faces are plane and are placed in contact when the objective is assembled. This arrangement facilitates adjustment of thickness of the objective and centring of the mirrors. As shown, the element 10, formed for example of glass, fused silica, synthetic crystal or other transparent material has a surface 3 formed as a concave mirror 1 having a central aperture 5, and has a plane surface contacting a similar surface on the element 11 to form an interface 9, the latter element having a convex mirror surface 2. Light from the object passes through an annular portion 6 of the element 11, is reflected by mirrors 1 and 2 and passes through the transparent portion 5 to form the image. Lenses may be placed beyond the portion 5 or before the objective to assist corrections. The elements are mounted in the holder shown and the interface cemented, the member 11 being adjusted for centring relative to the member 10 by grub-screws 19 before the cement has set.
