630,357. Turbine blading. F A I R - WEATHER, H. G. C. (Svenska Turbinfabriks Aktiebolaget Ljungstrom). Oct. 7, 1947, No. 26964. [Classes 110(i) and 110(iii)] A blade ring for a radial flow elastic fluid machine such as a turbine or compressor in which the blades are provided with dovetail roots at one or both ends which are dimensioned to act as distance pieces and engage an undercut annular groove in a supporting ring and are retained therein by rolling over the sides of the groove has an annular protecting strip inserted between the sides of the groove and the dovetail roots to prevent marking of the sides of the groove and to distribute the pressure of the blades on these sides. A blade 2, Fig. 1, has a dove-tail root 3 which engages an undercut groove in a supporting ring 1 and is retained therein by rolling over the sides 4, 5 of the groove. During this rolling action the blades tend to twist as shown in Fig. 2 and the edges of the blade roots to cut into the sides of the groove. To prevent this, annular protecting strips 6, 7 are placed in contact with the sides of the groove. The strips which may be of metal or other material are preferably softer than the material in which the groove is formed. The strips 6, 7 may be separate strips or on the sides of a single strip joined by a part 10. Modifications in which the protecting strip is extended to protect the tops of the sides of the grooves and also to form a packing strip between the blade rings are also described.
