[Class 74 (ii)] A draw mechanism for a straight-bar machine comprises an endless belt or chain 1 guided by pulleys or sprockets 1a, 1b, . . . 5a, 5b, and having a pin 14 which engages forks 12, 13, on upper and lower guide bars 9, 10, attached to the carrier bar 7. The path of the belt or chain is such that the pin 14 engages the fork 12 on the upper guide bar 9 to drive the carrier bar 7 in one direction and then engages the fork 13 on the lower guide bar 10 to drive the carrier bar in the opposite direction. As described, two movable plates 6a, 6b carrying the chain sprockets 2a, 2b . . . 5a, 5b are provided, a stationary sprocket 1a, 1b is associated with each plate and the arrangement is such that the plates may be moved towards or away from each other without effecting any variation in the chain tension or length. The pin 14 follows the path of the chain so that as it passes round the sprockets 2a, 5b, or 2b, 5a it disengages or engages the forks 12, 13 on the guide bars. Consequently any variation in the position of the plates varies the traverse of the carrier bar. At each end of its traverse the carrier rod is held stationary by a latch mechanism, comprising a recessed member 16 which is engaged by a latch 15a, 15b, when a stop member 20 on the guide bar 9 engages a stop 21a, 21b on the plate 6a, 6b. A cam may be provided to raise the latch 15a, 15b prior to the commencement of the traverse of the carrier bar. A chain 22 driven by a sprocket 24 drives the sprockets 1a, 1b at a constant speed.
