Abstract

629,890. Pressure gauges. NAVARRO, M., LLOVET, E. J., and LLOVET, A. E. April 3, 1946, No. 10291. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A pressure-relieving device, e.g. for motor vehicle tyres, comprises a support tube 5 secured to the tyre a, Fig. 1, and having a vented cover 10 and an adjustable bush member 6 formed with a flange 7 which coacts with a bush 4 adjustably secured to a discharge tube 1 and arranged to permit of relative movement between the discharge and support tubes. One end of a spring 18, which opposes the pressure in the tyre, abuts the flange 7 whilst its other end abuts the base of a guiding skirt 20 formed on the discharge tube which carries a bellows 23 sealed to the tyre. The usual inflation valve 3 disposed at the upper end of the tube 1 is arranged to open to expel excess air through the vented cover on the pressure in the tyre exceeding a predetermined value, set and indicated by the co-operation of a dial on the top of the cover with a pointer 15 secured to a finely-pitched screw 12 adjustably secured to the cover by a lock-nut 17. The tyre a is inflated in the usual manner after removal of the cover 10 and the inflation pressure is indicated on a scale 4a, Fig. 5, on the bush 4 which is visible through grooves 9 in the bush member 6. On the desired pressure being reached, the dial band pointer 15 are set thereat and the cover 10 replaced until the screw 12 is just clear of the valve 3. Should the pressure in the tyre increase, e.g. due to overheating, the bellows 23 will contract and move the discharge tube 1 upwards and the valve 3 into contact with the screw 12 to open the valve. In a modification, the bellows 23 is replaced by a diaphragm, whilst in another arrangement the spring 18 is replaced by a flexible bellows.
