996,885. Tyre building machines. PNEUMATIQUES CAOUTCHOUC MANUFACTURE ET PLASTIQUES KLEBER COLOMBES. Feb. 9, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 5113/62. Heading B7C. In a tyre building machine comprising a building drum formed by a tubular, flexible diaphragm C sealed at its ends to two coaxial discs A, B, which are movable axially away from each other, to tension the diaphragm for building a flat band carcase thereon, and towards each other on inflation of the diaphragm to effect shaping of the carcase, the movements of the end discs are effected by means of a pneumatic jack D housed wholly within the confines of the diaphragm and the discs. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the jack D is formed by two telescoping collars attached respectively one to each disc A and B, pressure air being fed to the jack space # via an axial bore 4 in the drum shaft E. The concentric radially outer diaphragm space alpha is supplied with inflation air via a conduit 5 extending through the bore 4. Operation of the jack to move the discs A and B is controlled by the supply or exhaust of air to or from the space #. The two collars are movably sealed to each other by a ring seal d1 or by a flexible foldable diaphragm, the collars being shorter in this case. Fig. 6 shows an alternative arrangement wherein the jack is defined by a radially inner tubular circumferentially inextensible diaphragm K which is also sealed at its ends to the end discs A and B to define the jack space #. In this arrangement, a spring-loaded compressible buffer 14, 17, 21 is carried by the disc A and serves to set the limiting positions of the disc B for the shaping and removal respectively of the carcase. An adjustable outer stop 6 on the shaft E limits the building position, of the disc B. In an alternative arrangement Fig. 10, a collar 25 extending exteriorly of disc B slides over an adjustably fixed stop 26 on the shaft E and carries an abutment member 27 at its outer end. The space 28 defined by the disc B, collar 25 and stop 26 may be pressurized or evacuated to assist movement of the disc B between a building position abutting stop 26 and a removal position wherein abutment 27 contacts stop 26. In a further arrangement, the end discs A, B carry peripheral bead sealing flanges and the building diaphragm C defines the jack space, the shaping of the tyre being effected by direct inflation of the carcase outwardly of the diaphragm.
