Abstract

907,694. Building pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1959 [Jan. 29, 1958], No. 2905/58. Class 144 (1). An unshaped flat band tyre carcase is formed by disposing a pocket of carcase ply fabric around a pair of coaxial, spaced, radiallyexpansible bead core-gripping members 3 with the central portion of the pocket unsupported and enclosing the space between the members 3 and the ends of the pocket extending axially outwardly beyond the members 3, positioning bead cores 22 to be gripped by expansion of the members 3 and then turning over the ply ends around the bead wires on to the centre portion by means 4 associated with each member 3. The space 33 between the members 3 is pressurized via pipe 34 to support the otherwise unsupported centre portion of the ply during the turn-over operation, which is effected as shown by the means described in Specification 884,513. The bead-gripping members 3 comprise rigid supports 5 each slidably mounted on a shaft 1 with its inner periphery recessed to form a double-acting cylinder 7, 8 co-operating with a fixed piston member 9 on the shaft 1, ducts 10, 11 providing for selective supply of pressure fluid to the chambers 7, 8 to effect approach or retraction of the supports 5. Each support 5 has an outer peripheral recess 17 housing an annular inflatable tube 18 serving to expand a rubber ring 19 the periphery of which is grooved to seat and locate the bead core 22. In operation, after ply turn-over has been effected by the means 4 and side wall strips 36 have been applied to the unshaped carcase, the supports 5 are moved towards each other and the space 33 further pressurized to shape the carcase into contact with a breaker 38 and tread band 37 carried by an expansible rigid support or mould ring 37, Fig. 5. Instead of the turn-over means 4 of Specification 884,513, that described in Specification 872,038 may be used.
