Abstract

1390399 Making pneumatic tyre carcasses CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE AG 7 Aug 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 36737/72 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre carcass is manufactured by first, Fig. 1, wrapping a ply or plies 3 about an assembly consisting of a cylindrical drum 1, annular bead support members 6 adjacent the drum ends, and annular inflatable bladders 8 adjacent the members 6; moving bead supply members 12 axially inwardly from a position remote from the assembly to locate a bead 10- 11 over each member 6; expanding the drum 1 so as to expand the ply portion between the beads and inflating the bladders 8 so that the outer ends of the ply or plies are gripped between the bladders and bead carrying sleeves 14 of the supply members 12; moving, Fig. 4, the sleeves 14 axially outwardly so that they release the beads and, in co-operation with the bladders 8, cause tensioning of at least the parts of the ply outer ends underlying the beads; during or after tensioning expanding the members 6 to support the beads; retracting the members 12 away from the drum; and further inflating the bladders 8 to turn the ply outer ends up about the beads. The drum 1 may comprise a plurality of arcuate segments 4 movable radially by means of an inflatable bladder 5 on which they are supported, and each member 6 may comprise a plurality of arcuate segments supported on a ring 7 which can be expanded by admission of fluid under pressure to a chamber 17 defined in part by the ring 7. The drum 1 and members 6 may bejournalled on a shaft 2 with each bladder 8 being carried on an annular member 9 supported by the adjacent member 6. The distance between the radially outer surface of each bladder 8, when uninflated, and the radially inner surface of the associated sleeve 14 may be at least twice the thickness of the bladder wall. Each sleeve 14 may be moved axially by means of gas pressure applied to a flange 18 thereon or by a rod 19 connected to the flange 18 and a cylinder device (not shown). The members 6 and bladders 8 may be movable axially away from the drum 1 to facilitate stitching after the ply ends have been turned up about the beads.
